SPIE congratulates 2021 Physics Nobel Laureates

SPIE congratulates this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics winners, Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi, “for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems.” Although not directly optics- or photonics-related, their work has helped explain the natural world and has certainly impacted our community.

Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann will share one half of the 10 million Swedish kronor prize money “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming.” Giorgio Parisi will receive the other half for “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”

Giorgio Parisi was a co-author on two presentations at SPIE Photonics West 2021, both demonstrating the use of optical computing to study spin glass thermodynamics. As we have done with previous Nobel winners, SPIE will make this work – published in the SPIE Digital Library – free to the community.
